COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


 

 

 

BASIC CAKE DECORATING, Session I or II….This is a 4 week class that will teach you the basic fundamentals of cake/cupcake decorating and simple cake design.  This is NOT a baking class.  This class will teach buttercream icing decorating.  Students will be able to decorate a simple cake by the time this class is complete.  It will be necessary to practice outside of class.  The only way to master techniques is to practice, practice, practice.  Materials needed:  25 piece Wilton tip set (available at Walmart for $12.00); 8” Round Cake (Yellow or Choc, Duncan Hines recommended).  INSTRUCTOR:  Stephanie Westbrook.

FUSION FITNESS DANCE....Focus is on physical fitness through dance exercises.  Emphasizes the development of cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, and flexibility.  This is a choreographed dance fitness class with a variety of upbeat music, incorporating cardio, strength, and stretch movements for a total body workout.  Movements are taken from Bailando-Latin Fusion Fitness Dance, Yoga, Pilates, Modern Dance, Ballet, Ballroom, Jazz, and Resistance Training.  Attention is given to adapting movements to meet the needs of the individual.  INSTRUCTOR:  Patricia W. Ward.

PILATES YOGA….Provides a method of mind-body exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, balance the body and improve posture and core stabilization while increasing body awareness.  This approach utilizes asanas (poses or postures) and the breath along with movements and visualizations to assist the release of spinal energy flow.  Pilates Matwork, as developed by Joseph Pilates, is blended into the Yoga work.  Via the breathwave, breathing fully and completely from the diaphragm, an individual is able to calm, release, relax and become receptive to a gentle yet dynamic process leading to an anticipated contemplative state of being.  INSTRUCTOR: Patricia W. DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLINIC….The purpose of the Bridge Clinic is to acquaint players with the difference between Duplicate and Contract or Auction Bridge.  During the clinic certain equipment will be explained, for example, duplicate boards and bid boxes.  The following conventions will be discussed: Stayman, Transfers, Negative Doubles, Weak Twos, and Unusual No Trump.  Each class will be two hours in length.  The first hour will be lecture and problem solving.  The second hour will consist of Bridge hands which demonstrate the convention.  INSTRUCTOR: Shirley Tribley.

LEADERSHIP CLUB FOR YOUTH….This class is designed for students from 10 through 14 years of age and is limited to 10 participants.  The class will create the first “Leadership Club” and will be on-going as students and parents wish to participate.  The student is a leader in one way or another and has the ability to transform society in his/her own way.  The US Department of Labor reports the average American makes seven major decisions in their lifetime……five of the seven are begun in college at an early age.   This class will focus on defining leadership, identifying the leadership attributes in everyone and ways to help young people use these attributes.  We will learn the importance of manners, eye contact, dress, use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Texting) and how character, integrity and leadership impact the best use of social media. This class will utilize the Habitudes™ curriculum developed by Dr. Tim Elmore, founder & president of Growing Leaders. INSTRUCTOR: Amy Cole.

INTRODUCTION TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX….An introduction to federal income tax with emphasis on the individual taxpayer.  Topics include filing status, exemptions, itemized deductions, and more.  We will also cover basic filing requirements for FAFSA (Federal Student Aid).  INSTRUCTOR: Brenda Terry.

MATH TUTORING FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS….Brush-up on math skills, prepare for the SOL’s and become a more confident math student.  Tutoring will include the following math disciplines:  Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Basic Geometry and Geometry.  INSTRUCTOR: George B. COMMONWEALTH GRADUATE ENGINEERING PROGRAM (CGEP) WEBINARS….This webinar series is open to anyone interested in IT Security. There is no cost.  Participants do not have to be enrolled as a student at any of the CGEP schools to participate, but we hope the series will provide an opportunity to see what CGEP and the various universities have to offer.  (Virginia Tech, George Mason University, University of Virginia, Old Dominion University)  For additional details on the seminar series, including times, technology requirements, and professor biographies, please consult the CGEP state website at:  http://cgep.virginia.gov/webinar.htm.

MEDITATION 101, Session I or II….Looking to get away for some peace and quiet but do not have the time or money for a week at a retreat center?  Learn to meditate!  Meditation 101 will provide you with the basic information, skills and techniques with which to begin a meditation practice of your own.  Through lectures, class discussions and practical, hands-on experience, serenity is just around the corner.  Anyone can do this, so all are welcome.  INSTRUCTOR: Christopher Ross.

THAT WASN’T IN MY HISTORY BOOK….There were more than 13 colonies?  There was a President who spoke English as a Second Language?  A future President was shot by a future Senator?  This information wasn’t in my history book.  A look at some of the interesting characters who have been part of our nation’s history--including the notorious, the off-beat, and the scandalous.  INSTRUCTOR: Judy P. Ward.

WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE....Women are typically attacked by much larger opponents. Most self-defense program rely on striking the attacker with punches and kicks which are not very reliable against a much larger and stronger opponent. We will demonstrate techniques that have been proven to equalize this common disadvantage. We will share effective techniques used while standing, as well as techniques used when the altercation is taken to the ground. Must be 21 years and older to enroll.  INSTRUCTOR: Ronnie B. Cole.

PHOTOSHOP EFFECTS 101, Session I or II or III….This course is designed to help the student learn Photoshop while creating amazing photo effects with professional quality results.  Geared toward beginners but great for all skill levels!  We will work in Photoshop CS5 to learn how to get the most out of your digital photos!  Learn how to fix underexposed and overexposed images, crop and straighten your images, create motion and action with the blur effect and correct blemishes and imperfections.  The student MUST bring up to 10 of his/her own digital images that could benefit from one of the aforementioned fixes.  The student MUST have a minimum acquaintance with Photoshop (any version).  INSTRUCTOR: Tina Morgan.

Ed2go….DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE PARTNER….Instructor-facilitated on-line courses are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive. Instructors are famous for their ability to create warm and supportive communities of learners. Powerpoint: Look good during a presentation! Learn how to illustrate your ideas on the computer to design a great looking presentation with the correct documentation/work cited, sound, transitions, animations, and themes

GRANTSMANSHIP “WHAT DO GRANTMAKERS WANT TO KNOW?”….2 Day Course.  Regardless of whether you have written hundreds of grant proposals or have never attempted to write one, this class is for you if you want to know the most successful strategies for securing grant funds.  Students will learn the basics of prospect research, planning for sustainability, developing a needs assessment, crafting goals and objectives, writing compelling narratives, budgeting dos and don’ts, and practical tips for applications.  But this is no ordinary grantwriting class!  You will also learn behind-the-scenes information about the world of philanthropy from a former university grant program officer.  This course will take you beyond the mechanics of developing and writing grants and help you understand both the art and the craft of Grantsmanship.  INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Charles Stallard.

ACCOUNTING FOR THE NON-ACCOUNTANT….Learn the basics of business operations and proper accounting procedures and reporting.  Topics include journal entries, financial statements, and more.  A great starting point for beginning accountants or those who just need to “brush-up” on accounting.  INSTRUCTOR: Brenda Terry.

BEEKEEPING….Learn how to keep your own bee hive and what benefits beekeeping and hive keeping bring.  The worldwide bee population is being threatened, hives are decreasing and in turn, our food supplies are being compromised.  The bee, the ultimate pollinator MUST survive. You can help this problem and reap the benefits of your own organic honey!  INSTRUCTOR: Hugh Mitchell Gravitt.

LEARNING MATTERS: MAKE YOURS A LEARNING ORGANIZATION….You may have heard the term “learning organization” more often in recent years, as the concept has gained in popularity.  But what exactly is a learning organization?  What are the reasons for building one?  And how would you go about it?  These are all issues to be discussed in this one day class.  Knowledge of the principles behind learning organizations, whether they be for-profit or non-profit, is a vital key to success in this competitive global market of ideas and services.  Successful organizations of all types and sizes have learned to draw on a learning culture to help them encourage innovation and manage change.  INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Charles Stallard.

ENTERPRISE VIRGINIA (a peer-driven community wealth building initiative) “ECONOMIC GARDENING: STARTING AND GROWING YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS”, Workshops I or II….This workshop will include a brief overview of entrepreneurship resources in Southern Virginia and how to determine profitable business opportunities, conduct market research and build a business plan.  The three weekly sessions will get you out of the gate quickly, connected to a community support behind, including free campus-based technical assistance resources beyond the workshop, as you attract customers and resources to make YOUR business grow---including POTENTIAL financing by United Virginia. SOUTHERN VIRGINIA BOTANICAL GARDENS FIRST ANNUAL GARDEN SERIES….Each class will last approximately 3 hours with a 20 minute break.  Whether you are novice gardener or have been communing with the soil for years, this enlightening and inspiring garden series is for you.  The series spans a 7 week period.  Topics include:  1) How To Keep Gardening For the Rest Of Your Life;  2) Four Season Gardening;  3) Make Your Own Special Garden Room;  4) The Amazing Daylily: What’s New;  5) Bringing Back Roses To Your Garden Painlessly;  6) Here A Herb, There A Herb, Everywhere A Herb;  7) Principles Of  Effective Garden Design.  INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Charles Stallard.

ACCOUNTING FOR NON-PROFITS….Learn the basics of maintaining the books and reporting requirements for non-profits.  Topics include financial statements, tax reporting and more.  A great starting point for any non-profit who wants to improve reporting procedures.  INSTRUCTOR: Brenda Terry.

NRA BASIC PISTOL COURSE….Each student will receive 6 hours of classroom instruction in gun safety and 2 hours of live fire instruction.  Each student will receive a framable certificate.  The program meets training requirements for concealed weapons permit.  Materials REQUIRED by each student:  eye protection; ear protection; handgun; 60 rounds ammo; gun cleaning kit.  INSTRUCTOR: Charles Newby.



MOSAIC DREAMS-DESIGN and FABRICATE A CERAMIC or GLASS WORK OF ART (choose from 2 time periods)….Is there a broken plate that you can’t bear to part with, or a collection of odd things that you’ve dug up in your garden? Perhaps you have a mismatched set of pieces from Monopoly and other  games that you think would be cool if……?  If you have these or if you’re just interested in learning how to do mosaics then this class is for you. Artist, Julia Crocker and her 30 years of experience as a designer will help you unleash the artist within.  This class is offered in 3 sessions.  The first hour will be used to consolidate your ideas, and come up with a list of things you will need to make your dream a reality.  The next session of a two hour duration will be used to compose and glue your creation to a supporting structure, and the second two hour session will provide help and tips on the art of grouting to complete your artistic work.  INSTRUCTOR: Julia Crocker.

ENJOYING MODERN POETRY….Ever open a poetry book to The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Elliott and wonder just what the heck’s going on?  Ever crack open a copy of Ezra Pound’s Cantos and nod off almost at once?  Welcome to the wonderful world of Modern Poetry!!  It’s not as confusing as it looks.  We will take you through some places in modern literature and tell you all about it.  We will tell you why rhyme fell out of fashion, why a free-verse poet of the 1920’s was reincarnated into the body of a cockroach/ We will discuss The Great War-The Poet’s War; The Jazz Age and the love lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay.  We will talk about Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath and how shocked America was in the 1950’s by Allen Ginsberg’s Howl.  This series will be informative and fun!  INSTRUCTOR: Jack Peachum.
